For PayPal veteran Paul Ryan, the recent move from his Senior Director role in Ireland to become Vice President and CEO of PayPal Australia has been “a real homecoming”.
“I moved from Sydney to Dublin when I was 16 and always cherished my memories of growing up in Maroubra and playing rugby league here,” said Paul. “I never lost touch with my Australian roots and will never give up my Australian identity or accent – no matter how much my three teenage sons tease me.”
Bringing a wealth of experience and deep business knowledge, Paul has been with PayPal for more than a decade, serving in a range of senior roles, heading large teams and leading large-scale complex international operations.
Paul began his career in the Dublin International Financial Services Centre before taking on roles with JPMorgan, HSBC, PNC and Dillon Eustace Solicitors. Paul joined PayPal Europe in 2010, taking on increasing levels of responsibility and leadership over the years.
“I am delighted to be back in Australia and have loved meeting all of my PayPal Australia colleagues over the past few weeks, albeit virtually due to COVD-19 social distancing measures,” said Paul.
“What has struck me most about the Australian team is the pride everyone shares in PayPal’s purpose to empower people and businesses to thrive in the global economy, and the understanding the team has of the role they play to achieve that purpose.”
“These uncertain times are challenging for everyone, but I’ve been inspired by the way the Australian business has come together to support each other, stay connected and stay focused on serving our customers.
“We have taken steps to help our small business customers who are most impacted by the coronavirus pandemic to navigate these challenging times and we are doing everything we can to educate consumers on how to take advantage of the secure and safe digital payments options available to them to shop online from the safety of their homes.”
Paul said his leadership style was underpinned by openness, collaboration and accountability, and that he is passionate about diversity and inclusion.
“I’ve seen a high level of commitment to PayPal’s values during my time here so far, particularly our strong focus on inclusion and collaboration. It is clear to me that every employee knows they are valued, accepted and respected, as are their diverse thoughts and opinions.
“It’s only when every employee feels comfortable, confident and supported that we can truly achieve our individual and collective potential.”
